we've got plants coming out our ears!
In my garden post earlier this week, some of you noticed that we have a bunch of containers on the stoop. While one of those containers has already bitten the dust (hey feral cats – LEAVE OUR CATNIP ALONE!), the rest of them house a collection of herbs, fruits and veggies that we hope to enjoy all summer long.
In past fire-escape container gardens, we’ve grown a handful of tomatoes and herbs, but I’m excited this year to branch out and experiment now that we have more space! In addition to the regular line-up of herbs, we picked up an everlasting strawberry plant, a few kinds of lettuce, and several sweet and hot peppers at the Union Square Greenmarket. Plus, my little pickling cucumber plant is going gangbusters in the heat.
Tip: if you’re looking for a huge selection of heirloom veggies, I highly recommend Silver Heights Farm, who’s at the Greenmarket on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Not only are they super nice, their catalog has an insane number of plants and they’ll even bring you a flatpack of your choice if you order ahead!
I thought I’d share a few photos of my stoop’s container garden, and I’m wondering if we’ll ever stop buying new plants. Is there a support group for plant hoarders?! Hope everyone has a great weekend and has a chance to get their hands dirty!
