pocket light meter for the iphone

It’s no secret that I’m an Apple fan-girl, or that I totally love shooting with my iPhone in a pinch. But recently I stumbled on a new app that’s especially appealing to film photographers like me: the Pocket Light Meter.

I recently went looking for a light meter app because I was having trouble with my old-school light meter, and so far, this tool is great! The app was developed by a Flickr photographer and is available for free on iTunes, compatible with the iPhone 3GS or 4. He’s constantly writing updates and bug fixes for the software, and encourages user feedback in the forums. Personally, I have found the exposure readings to be great (even at ISO 3200!), and it’s fantastic to have a secondary light meter for the times I want to travel light.

The user interface is intuitive, and allows you to lock aperture, shutter speed, or ISO on the fly. Other options include a histogram display, full/half/third stops for shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, and the ability to correct EV from -3 to +3. The free version is supported by ads, but you can use the handy in-app links to fork over 99 cents and get rid of them – or buy the developer a beer and get rid of the ads for $4.99. Totally worth it to support freelance development, in my opinion!
