You might remember the surprise that showed up on my doorstep awhile back. Well, he hasn’t quite left yet! I have a couple of friends interested in adopting him this summer, so he’s been chilling out (and filling out) at my house in the meantime.

After passing my electrical inspection on Thursday, I took the kitten with me to work just for grins since most of my co-workers were traveling. If you’re following my tweets (or my posts to Instagram — which I’m totally addicted to), you may have seen some of these shots, but I couldn’t resist sharing them again here. This little guy had a blast running around the office and I just can’t get over how adorable he is!

electrical inspection- PASSED!

I have very exciting news today: we passed our electrical inspection this morning! [cue the happy dance!]

After some minor fixes, a no-show inspector, and months of waiting, the city finally came through this morning to review and we have officially passed our inspection! I was so excited to tear down the sign and hand over my final payment to the awesome guys at Transcend and be done with it. Though there’s plenty of work to be done on the house yet, it’s now all on us to get motivated and get it done.

Also: how crazy is it that it’s been almost a year since we closed on this place?!

are you going to the mermaid parade?

Ladies and gentlmens, it is that magical time of year again — time for the Mermaid Parade! The parade starts at 2pm THIS SATURDAY, June 18th at Coney Island, where all sorts of mermaids and mermen and fanciful ocean creatures will meet up at West 21st and the Surf Avenue before heading down the parade route.

Last year, For the Love of Brooklyn hosted a meet-up for the event, but the crowds were huge and it was a bit tough to do much photo-walking, let alone photo-standing. So, this year if anyone’s interested, I’ll be heading down a couple of hours early around 11:30-12pm to spend some quality time in the $5-per-camera staging area and walking around as the revelers arrive. If anyone would like to join, leave a comment here or over on Facebook!

In the meantime, check out some of my favorite shots from last year! Aren’t these photographs amazing?

we’ve got plants coming out our ears!

In my garden post earlier this week, some of you noticed that we have a bunch of containers on the stoop. While one of those containers has already bitten the dust (hey feral cats — LEAVE OUR CATNIP ALONE!), the rest of them house a collection of herbs, fruits and veggies that we hope to enjoy all summer long.

In past fire-escape container gardens, we’ve grown a handful of tomatoes and herbs, but I’m excited this year to branch out and experiment now that we have more space! In addition to the regular line-up of herbs, we picked up an everlasting strawberry plant, a few kinds of lettuce, and several sweet and hot peppers at the Union Square Greenmarket. Plus, my little pickling cucumber plant is going gangbusters in the heat.

Tip: if you’re looking for a huge selection of heirloom veggies, I highly recommend Silver Heights Farm, who’s at the Greenmarket on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Not only are they super nice, their catalog has an insane number of plants and they’ll even bring you a flatpack of your choice if you order ahead!

I thought I’d share a few photos of my stoop’s container garden, and I’m wondering if we’ll ever stop buying new plants. Is there a support group for plant hoarders?! Hope everyone has a great weekend and has a chance to get their hands dirty!
