I just got back from picking up my Mermaid Parade film at the developer, so I can hardly wait to get home and get to scanning! In the meantime, I’m excited to share this next batch of shots from Coney Island which features a little theme. This year it seemed like there were more parasols, parapluies, and plain ol’ umbrellas than I remember ever seeing in the parade, and my eye was always drawn to the lovely ladies carrying them. If you haven’t seen the rest of this week’s coverage, click here and here for more posts in this series. Enjoy!

And the coverage continues! The photos from this past weekend’s Mermaid Parade at Coney Island continue to pour in today via the For the Love of Brooklyn Flickr group, and I can’t wait to share more all week. I’m keeping an eye on galleries as they crop up, so please be sure to post a link to your gallery in the comments or tweet @loveofbrooklyn if you’d like me to feature your gallery!

Check out some of my favorites below and stay tuned for more as the week continues. If you’re hungry for more, be sure to check out these fantastic sets by Adam Lerner, Jane Kratochvil, Oscar Rivera, and Leanne Staples!

June 20th, 2011 | Posted by Jill in events | meet-up - (4 Comments)

This past Saturday, Coney Island was swimming in mermaids and mermen, fantastical sea creatures and Lady Gaga-lookalikes, and pasties galore. The beautiful weather brought out huge crowds for the 2011 Mermaid Parade, including hundreds of photographers. Who’s down for a photographer float next year??!

A big group of us met up before the parade for an unofficial meetup and had a ton of fun. This week I’ll be featuring some of my favorite shots from the parade, because let’s be honest — it’s one of my very favorite unique-to-New-York institutions. Where else can you go to see this much crazy in one place??!

I’m keeping an eye on galleries as they crop up, so please be sure to post a link to your gallery in the comments or tweet @loveofbrooklyn if you’d like me to feature your gallery this week! Here are some of the great ones I’ve spotted so far and some beautiful photos to kick us off!

Ladies and gentlmens, it is that magical time of year again — time for the Mermaid Parade! The parade starts at 2pm THIS SATURDAY, June 18th at Coney Island, where all sorts of mermaids and mermen and fanciful ocean creatures will meet up at West 21st and the Surf Avenue before heading down the parade route.

Last year, For the Love of Brooklyn hosted a meet-up for the event, but the crowds were huge and it was a bit tough to do much photo-walking, let alone photo-standing. So, this year if anyone’s interested, I’ll be heading down a couple of hours early around 11:30-12pm to spend some quality time in the $5-per-camera staging area and walking around as the revelers arrive. If anyone would like to join, leave a comment here or over on Facebook!

In the meantime, check out some of my favorite shots from last year! Aren’t these photographs amazing?
