january meet-up: brooklyn chinatown!

January 16th, 2012 | Posted by Jill in meet-up | sunset park - (0 Comments)

For years, I’ve wanted to do a photowalk through Brooklyn’s Chinatown ever since I read Robert Sietsema wax poetic about it here. I did go visit a few years back, but went camera-less and have regretted it ever since. Plus, there aren’t nearly enough great photos of Sunset Park in our Flickr pool! Though I LOVE Ed Brydon’s shot below…

Anyway — who’s in? Let’s meet at the N Train at 8th Avenue at the south end of Chinatown. We’ll walk up 8th Avenue and hopefully sample a few of the local delicacies like hand-pulled noodles, banh mi, and dumplings to ward off the cold. Please feel free to invite friends!

Date: Saturday, January 21st
Time: 3:00pm – 6:00pm (or later!)
Location: Meet outside the N train at 8th Avenue!

Bring a tripod if you want to continue shooting after dark! And if you just want to come along for the food — I don’t blame you.

dream factory

factory

It seemed like a dream. Prior to this day, I had no idea this place existed, and until I found it on Google Maps, I was pretty sure it was all a dream.

It had to be in the 90′s that day, and after riding my bike for the previous hour in the blistering sun, I was delirious. Peter knew where we going and the sun didn’t seem to bother him too much. But I was dying. It was nice to hide in the shade given off by the factory wall and drink some water. Looking down the abandoned cobblestone street in between these massive structures, one could only imagine what it would have looked like filled with trucks, workers, industry and life. The desolation added to the hazy dreaminess of the locale.

Now as the cold breeze begins to blow the leaves from the trees, I daydream of a Sunday in late August, riding along the Gowanus Bay taking pictures.

down by the tracks

down by the tracks

These vintage chrome relics were haphazardly parked on old train tracks near the Brooklyn Army Terminal waterfront, looking ready to jump into action at a moment’s notice. I waited around to catch a glimpse of the drivers, but they were nowhere to be seen.

Ahh, this is the stuff that old Brooklyn movies are made of… all I needed was a cannoli and an egg cream.
