happy centennial to the manhattan bridge

manhattan bridge vertorama 2A very Happy Birthday to the Manhattan Bridge today! There will be a celebration at 7pm for the occasion and it will feature fireworks, a marching band, and a reenactment of the original walk across the bridge.

This bridge was actually the last to be built  of the three bridges that connect Manhattan and Brooklyn.  The Brooklyn Bridge was of course the first and the Williamsburg was the second.  The Manhattan bridge was designed by Polish engineer Ralph Modjeski.  This is my favorite of the three bridges and looks the most impressive in my opinion.  It’s also a really enjoyable subject to photograph.  If you’d like the full res version of this image (~20mb), we’re letting you download the full res (no commercial or public use granted to anyone though, sorry), in celebration of its birthday.

Full Resolution Download from PeterKruger.com (~20mb)

Enjoy the free photo for now!  I’m off to photograph the event.  We will post pics here later!

Manhattan Bridge 9.09

The Manhattan Bridge turns 100 this weekend, complete with fireworks by the Gruccis.  Festivities will commence at 7:00pm this Sunday (10/4).    Apparently the Manhattan School of Music Brass Quintet will perform at the East River Park Amphitheatre, but I say and skip the music stay in BK.  I work in DUMBO and took this photo on my lunch break.  If you haven’t spent much time in DUMBO I recommend you make an evening of it.

Get here early, head over to Grimaldi’s for their coal brick oven pizza.  Expect to wait a long time, especially during peak eating hours.  (It’s worth the wait).  Check out the free fireworks, maybe even get some ice cream at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory.

art under the bridge

As the Friday light faded this weekend, I started getting excited for the DUMBO Art Under the Bridge festival, in its 13th year in Brooklyn. I work in the neighborhood and the tension in the air always gets noticeably more excited in the ‘hood when it’s time for the annual festival.

One of our photographers (and my co-worker, too) was showing in an studio there, and I couldn’t wait to check it out. But before we headed out, we threw open one of the warehouse windows at our office, got a strong breeze of the cool September air, and snapped some shots of the fading light.

It turned out the galleries were lovely and we met some very cool people, all photographing Brooklyn. Can’t wait to rope them in…
