This is too good not to share: on the Promenade in Brooklyn Heights, by the fantastic Adam Lerner. Classic.
“sal and lou haven’t spoken in years”

July 27th, 2010 | Posted by in brooklyn heights | history - (4 Comments)For this Brooklyn lover, there are few places that capture my imagination more than the romantic alleyways and dead-end streets of Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill. The old carriage houses that line the former mews hearken back to a much different time and place, one in which horses drove carriages along the cobblestone paths — instead of well-to-do nannies and soccer moms.
Grace Court Alley is one of these such streets, nestled into a cozy nook off Hicks Street. Forgotten NY reports that this tiny street, along with neighboring Hunts Lane, was once “home to the stables of Remsen and Joralemon Streets, which parallel it to the north and south.”
Predictably, the former stables are now home to ultra-lux residences, but many of the original details remain – both inside and out. In fact, if you’d like a peek at the inside of one such drool-worthy home, check out this recent listing on Brownstoner. Swoon.
But me? I’ll make do until I win the lottery and take my camera out for a leisurely stroll…
a walk along columbia heights
July 24th, 2010 | Posted by in brooklyn heights | recommended walks - (1 Comments)Let’s just say that a walk like this is a mighty fine way to relax before heading home after a stressful day at work. Or if you’re just in town and visiting Brooklyn. Or if you need to remember how beautiful this borough is.
Wait until the sun is starting to set, about 7:30pm these long days of late July. Start your walk in DUMBO (or at the High Street A/C or Clark Street 2/3) and head west through Cadman Plaza Park and west on Cranberry Street to the Columbia Heights waterfront. Admire the mansions. Bask in the golden light of sunset. Sit down on a bench along the Promenade and enjoy the view.
I have got to do this more often.
P.S. If you want to know more about the street’s history, check out the Brooklyn Eagle archives here.
a walk in the cadman plaza park
April 10th, 2010 | Posted by in brooklyn heights | parks and museums - (2 Comments)One of my favorite places to take a long walk after work is through Cadman Plaza park. Nestled at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge just east of the Heights, the park always has something interesting going on — especially in this beautiful weather. On a recent stroll, the plaza was stuffed to the brim with dog walkers, high school cross country runners, a team of peewee soccer players, and even a martial arts class practicing with their sensei. It’s such a respite from the noisy blare of the BQE, plus the city has done a lovely job of planting gorgeous trees and flowers that are putting on quite the show right now.
Check out some shots below, and many thanks to Gothamist for featuring one of these shots on Friday!
