This week, I realized we are nearing a big milestone in the For the Love of Brooklyn Flickr group: almost 5,000 submissions! Our contributors are blowing me away with their contributions, and the variety of styles and techniques are truly inspirational. More often than not, I don’t even know where to start when picking my favorites! (You guys totally rock.)

Today’s installation of Flickr Faves is an ode to the square format, this time in high-contrast black-and-white. A stellar iPhone shot, a sweet pinhole photograph, old-school medium format, and digital — it’s all below. Can you guess which they are without looking?! Say what you will about the heat and humidity that’s been plaguing our fair borough for the last few weeks — we’ve certainly had our share of miserable, dripping days. For the Love of Brooklyn is a site that provides Brooklyn photographers with a place to discuss, showcase, and view, Brooklyn photography. This is not a revolutionary concept—there are other sites where you can discuss/showcase your Brooklyn photographs—but there is something very special about FTLOB. FTLOB quickly established itself as not just another website, but as a community.

The success of FTLOB can be directly attributed to the hard work, passion and enthusiasm of FTLOB founder Jill Harrison. Jill has been the driving force behind FTLOB and has taken it from a domain name with an empty page to a community that many photographers consider their home base. Through her passion for photography and the love of Brooklyn, Jill has created something special that provides a unique perspective of the borough to its residents and those who (rightfully) wished they were. Posting often, Jill always inspires us with her photographical documentation of the people and places of her surroundings. Across digital and film, 35mm and medium format, she always is able to capture the unique character around her with a keen photographic eye.

Today we have a very special post, because it is Jill’s birthday. We wanted to take a moment to recognize all the hard work she has done. We wanted to thank her for pulling us all together, for organizing us, inspiring us, and showing us how a group of busy, hardworking and competitive photographers can come together for the greater good of the community at large. Thank you Jill for all you’ve done for the site, the borough, and how you’ve inspired the photographers around you.

Hopefully you’ve had a chance to go outside and enjoy the weather today! I took a break just before lunch to stretch out on a picnic blanket at the Brooklyn Bridge Park, just like Marie over at 66 Square Feet recently did. (I highly recommend this approach to your work day.) It’s hard not to admire how green and lovely the parks are getting with this beautiful summery weather, and the round-up of Flickr faves below certainly reflects that.

Take a load off, drink a few sips of a nice iced coffee, and enjoy these picks!

Unless you live in a cave (or North Korea), you probably heard buzz earlier this week about Steve Jobs’ keynote announcing the new iPhone 4. Like a true geek, I was following along with the Engadget liveblog and found the new upgrades to the iPhone 4 camera really exciting (bigger backlit sensor, upgrade to 5MP, 720p HD video – more here).

And if you follow photography even casually, it’s hard to ignore the buzz about each new iPhone app that hits the street. The iPhone is already one of my favorite cameras in a pinch, and many of the new apps are super fun. Heck, even designer Andy Spade (of Kate Spade / Jack Spade fame) released an entire book of whimsical and inspiring photos, shot with his iPhone.

One of my favorite new toolkits is the retro Hipstamatic app, which mimics the look and feel of old vintage toy cameras. Its crazy cross-processing-esque colors satisfy the kid in me, and paint the Brooklyn landscape in a new way. I’ve noticed several of the photographers in our Flickr pool are using the app too — check out a few beautiful shots below.

While the weather in Brooklyn this weekend was positively sweltering, it looks like several of the photographers in our Flickr pool had the right idea to hop on the train and hit the beach. Today’s round-up of dreamy shots from the Flickr pool is inspired by the late-lingering evening sun that happily persists these days: the light is getting cinematic as we ease into June, and golden rays give into luscious blue night skies and dramatic shadows. And who’s to tell what the full moon this Thursday night will bring?! Hopefully more of these moody, surreal shots, that’s for sure!

It’s been a busy week at For the Love of Brooklyn HQ: giving out-of-town parents a whirlwind tour of Brooklyn’s finest, taking friends from DC to the new Brooklyn Bridge Park, and hosting an impromptu blog meetup in Williamsburg to discuss some exciting plans for the future. I’m looking forward to a relaxing weekend with plenty of sunshine and photos!
