Last weekend, our impromptu meet-up at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden turned out to be a lovely time. We had a chance to see a preview of the new visitors’ center which is scheduled to open May 16th and also the extension plot for the upcoming native flora garden extension. Plus, the cherry blossoms were indeed beginning to bloom around the Japanese pond — life is good.

Check out a few of my favorite shots from the walk and have a lovely week!

… and though he couldn’t make it to this meet-up, I couldn’t help but include Shawn Hoke‘s lovely photo from the garden this week! Brooklyn is for lovers, indeed.

january meet-up: brooklyn chinatown!

January 16th, 2012 | Posted by Jill in meet-up | sunset park - (0 Comments)

For years, I’ve wanted to do a photowalk through Brooklyn’s Chinatown ever since I read Robert Sietsema wax poetic about it here. I did go visit a few years back, but went camera-less and have regretted it ever since. Plus, there aren’t nearly enough great photos of Sunset Park in our Flickr pool! Though I LOVE Ed Brydon’s shot below…

Anyway — who’s in? Let’s meet at the N Train at 8th Avenue at the south end of Chinatown. We’ll walk up 8th Avenue and hopefully sample a few of the local delicacies like hand-pulled noodles, banh mi, and dumplings to ward off the cold. Please feel free to invite friends!

Date: Saturday, January 21st
Time: 3:00pm – 6:00pm (or later!)
Location: Meet outside the N train at 8th Avenue!

Bring a tripod if you want to continue shooting after dark! And if you just want to come along for the food — I don’t blame you.

because i love face-melting guitar solos

Tonight, I’m taking a break from the crazy travel-and-work schedule to head to Terminal 5 and see the Smashing Pumpkins, which just so happens to be my favorite band of all time (and the reason I started blogging years and years ago). It’s been a long time since I had the opportunity to see one of their live shows and take photographs – and I can’t wait for the face-melting guitar solos.

If you’re headed to the show, send me a tweet @loveofbrooklyn or @hipstersunited – would love to see you there!

the dumbo arts festival, in pictures

September 26th, 2011 | Posted by Jill in events | flickr faves - (1 Comments)

This past weekend, DUMBO once again played host to one of the most fun and interactive art festivals I’ve ever visited — and there were plenty of surprises. Galleries in old dumpsters and shipping containers, crazy light shows on the Manhattan Bridge, and fascinating exhibits with subjects as diverse as Brooklyn’s own residents. I met up with Barry and Ed Friday night to check it out, and though some of the exhibits were closed (or hadn’t yet opened? I still can’t figure that aspect of the scheduling out) we had a fun time trekking around the ‘hood.

Check out some great shots of the festival that are already cropping up in our Flickr group! What were your favorite exhibits?
