upcoming events this week!

If These Walls Could Talk IBeyond featuring the awesome talent we encounter each and every day in Brooklyn (like this awesome photo from love44), one of the next things we hope to do is promote upcoming community events so that we can celebrate all your accomplishments! We’ve been hearing bits and pieces about your upcoming gallery openings, dissertation portfolios, and DIY art spaces, and we can’t wait to share those details with our readers. But before I get ahead of myself, there are a couple of events happening THIS WEEK that you should know about!

First of all, starting Friday, the DUMBO Arts Center (map) is hosting a giant pop-up art shop featuring the works of loads of borough artists at completely reasonable prices (starting at $50?! yes, please). And the great news is that proceeds from the sale will benefit the small non-profit, which hosts great events like the Art Under the Bridge festival, young artist internships, and other programs.

Also on Friday, the Brooklyn Heights Association celebrates their Centennial with a special exhibit opening and gallery talk from 6:30pm-8:30pm at the Brooklyn Historical Society (map), featuring a “special exhibition of rare and unusual prints showing Brooklyn Heights and the area over a period of 150 years.” The exhibit will run from February 27 – March 14 and you can preview a few of the prints here!

Stay tuned for more details about our next monthly photo walk — we should have those by Friday!

And just for fun, Time Out New York has a huge section this week on Brooklyn vs. Manhattan, including a quiz you can take to see where you belong. As if.

kitchen viewI’ve already posted a few from the snowstorms we’ve been having this February in Brooklyn, but I wanted to post this last one. So often, when a photogenic weather event such as a snow storm happens, photographers (myself absolutely included) immediately think about where to go to get the best shots. As I was sitting in my apartment debating about where to venture while enjoying a nice heavy beer to compliment the winter storm, I paused for a second to look out my kitchen window.

I had been so wrapped up in thinking about where to go, that I forgot about the beauty of the scene sitting right in front of me. I grabbed the film camera, adjusted the settings, and took a shot.

more love for the subway

One recent evening, I decided to strap on my hiking boots and go out in the snow to enjoy the brisk night air. I took one of my film cameras and a tripod, expecting a nice, relaxing walk. However, Brooklyn had something a bit different in mind. As I was waiting for a long exposure to finish for the shot below, a man came running up to me.

express tracks

“Are you a photographer?” he asked urgently, hands full of grocery bags. Uh, do you see my tripod, man? “You gotta go over there! There’s been an accident!” He pointed to the north side of the Prospect Expressway, where I could see lights flashing from the highway down below. I finished up the shot, collapsed the tripod, and ran to the fence where he’d pointed.

I watched as the first of many fire trucks arrived on the scene. I could see straight down into the car that had ricocheted off the median in the west-bound lane; there was a young woman in the driver’s seat, moving slightly. No firefighter approached the car until they shut down traffic, and cars continued to speed by the smoking fender.

Finally, the rescue workers approached the car, spoke brief words of reassurance, and prepared her a gurney for the ambulance. She was speaking and the firefighters were smiling as they safely loaded her up for the hospital.

I, on the other hand, was running out of film, but managed to snag a shot of the traffic backup before hiking home. Let’s hear it for the MTA. I love the subway.

As I was catching up with all the wonderful submissions to the Flickr group this weekend, I realized we hit a major milestone: there are now more than 1000 photos in the mix!! We’re also inching closer and closer to 100 members, which blows my mind. As this artistic collective grows, I can’t wait to see (and feature!) the fantastic work you all are doing.

To that end, we’re happy to introduce a new regular feature to the blog — our Flickr faves. We plan to curate a selection of work that inspires us and share it with you at least once a week. And if you’re not on Flickr, fear not — feel free to contact us and let us know about your latest and greatest.

Without further ado, check out a few of our favorite shots below!
